Four concrete creations of wet scrubbers for the treatment and abatement of odorous substances and/or VOCs

Application 1: baking soda processing in the chemical sector

The customer is one of the main producers of chemical products such as fluorine, barium, strontium for various applications in energy, electronics, agrochemistry and food. The company is certified and applies management systems that follow ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards.

The problem that the company presents to Tecnosida® is the need for a strong reduction of VOCs produced during the processing of sodium bicarbonate.

The company also needs a reduction, to a lesser extent, in the concentrations of dust.

Vertical wet scrubber

Tecnosida®, after an adequate inspection, proposes to carry out the abatement of the odor compounds through a vertical wet Scrubber system which, with the use of specific reagents, is able to significantly reduce the concentrations of different categories of molecules present in the emission to be treated.
The absorption of the pollutant can be purely physical, if the substance is incorporated in the washing liquid, or chemical, if the substance reacts chemically with the liquid or with the reagents dissolved in it.
Tecnosida®, upon specific request, designs, builds and delivers the finished product, delivering the laying layouts together with the pre-assembled group ready for installation at the customer’s expense.
It also provides on-site technical support and constant telephone assistance during the installation phase.

Application 2: emissions from pomace oil extraction

In this new case, the client company is a pomace factory and takes care of the extraction of pomace oil. This activity presents a typical problem linked to the odors that this type of processing gives off. Specifically, the pomace that is not processed in a short time, but can accumulate in storage for several weeks, emits odors that spread in the surrounding air causing complaints from the neighborhood.
The customer then contacted Tecnosida® requesting a suitable solution.

Scrubber two-stage stainless steel

To solve the problem, Tecnosida® proposes, measures, designs and manufactures a double-stage scrubber. In this case, it is a wet abatement system consisting of two vertical washing towers with a flow rate of 55,000 Nm3/h, complete with dosing technology and management of chemical reagents. This technology allows the air to undergo a double treatment because:

  • in the first stage, a basic solution is used in order to neutralize the acidic substances present (in this case hydrogen sulphide and marcaptans);
  • in the second stage an oxidizing solution allows to oxidize or eliminate biological molecules and to reduce their potentially pathogenic microbiological load.

The operating temperature downstream of the dryers, i.e. at the entrance to the scrubber treatment system, is over 60°C, which is why Tecnosida® manufactures stainless steel washing towers. In each column of the scrubber there is a double washing layer made up of static beds with filling rings, spray nozzles and high efficiency drop separator; solenoid valves and connection pipes then allow the automatic replenishment of the washing water and the purge of the existing one.

Scrubber for emissions from pomace oil extraction

At the base of each tower there is a collection tank equipped with instruments for:

  • the control of the Ph and Redox values, in order to manage them correctly
  • the display of level indicators

The solution proposed by Tecnosida has made it possible to solve the problem that the customer complained of, limiting the emission of odorous compounds into the atmosphere and eliminating the complaints connected to it.

Application 3: Wet purification of alkaline vapors in the processing of aluminum

The client company described in this short article operates in the metallurgical sector and specializes in the processing of aluminum by extrusion. Thanks to his long experience in the field he manages to design and produce solutions for different industrial sectors.
The problem proposed to Tecnosida by the customer is linked to the fact that, at the end of the extrusion cycle, the aluminum pieces produced are systematically immersed in tanks containing caustic soda in order to check for the presence of defects. This step regularly causes the emission of vapors containing water, caustic soda and aluminum hydroxide. The customer, who already had an aspiration system without reduction, finds several times, downstream of the aspiration system, emissions that do not comply with the limits imposed by current legislation. The company then contacts Tecnosida® to find the optimal solution for the problem described.

Washing scrubber for alkaline vapors

Following the technical inspection and the surveys usually necessary for adequate design, Tecnosida® proposes the creation of a wet scrubber capable of treating the vapors emitted during the customer’s production process. The proposal meets the approval of the customer and leads to the creation of a wet scrubber in polypropylene with an air flow rate of 2,500 m3/h and “static bed” technology specially sized according to the needs of the company
To break down caustic soda and alkaline compounds present in the aeriform flow, the scrubber is equipped with a dosage system containing a reagent (hydrochloric acid) which, thanks to its acidic nature, is able to neutralize caustic soda (basic component).

To complete the system, Tecnosida® also supplies and installs a centrifugal aspirator, pipes, electrical panel and inverter for the complete management of the designed system.
This creation allows to completely solve the problem that the customer complained about and to trace the emissions into the atmosphere within the limits established by law.

Application 4: fumes and VOCs from rubber vulcanization

The company described in this paragraph deals with the manufacture and marketing of gaskets and technical rubber items used in various product sectors. Among the various production processes in place at the plant, the company immediately reports a problem related to the vulcanization phase of the rubber, or to the processing phase that changes the molecular conformation of the base polymer, increasing elasticity and changing the strength of the final product.

This processing allows the creation of different products, thanks also to the use of different fillers, but involves the release of fumes in the environment, related to the high temperature, and VOCs that must be treated specifically.

The customer, even if already equipped with a reduction system, presents the need to replace it with a more performing one both in relation to greater needs in scope and in relation to the desire to obtain better performance.

Wet scrubber in polypropylene

To solve the problem, Tecnosida® measures, designs and manufactures a scrubbing system called polypropylene scrubber, with a flow rate of 10,000 Nm3/h, consisting of:

  • vertical cylindrical demolition tower made of polypropylene formed by central washing unit and lower tank for collecting the washing solution;
  • reagent dosing system;
  • centrifugal aspirator;
  • connection pipes
